What to Do When You Are Feeling Stressed Out

Sometimes stress can get the best of us. Perhaps you are having a bad day, a bad week, or even a bad year. Maybe you have lost a job or been given a promotion with added responsibility. Whatever the cause of your stress, it is important to understand how to get a handle of it.

Stress is dangerous both from a physical and mental standpoint. Chronic stress over a long period of time will not only leave you feeling exhausted, ineffective and frustrated, but it could contribute to problems with your physical health. Left untreated, chronic stress will lead to early aging and increased medical problems.

What then, can be done to mitigate stress? Fortunately, it is not something that is out of your control.

Take a Step Back

Sometimes we become so wrapped up in our personal problems and issues that we lose perspective. One way to help beat stress is to somehow gain this perspective. This might mean taking a short vacation, doing something for others less fortunate such as working at a soup kitchen, or asking for someone else's opinion. Whatever method you choose, see if your stress doesn't abate a little with a bit of time away, both mentally and physically.

Don't Procrastinate

Sometimes the things that cause us stress are not that hard to deal with if planned for in advance. If every morning your family scrambles to get out the door, try to start planning your day the night before. If you always leave holiday shopping until the last minute, try doing it early this year. A task done way ahead of deadline can be much more enjoyable and much less stressful than something left until the last minute. Take time out today to start planning for tomorrow.

Find Physical Stress Relievers

There are many things that you can do to physically help alleviate stress. Some examples include getting regular exercise, avoiding caffeine and sugar, and practicing relaxation exercises such as deep breathing and guided imagery. If you are married or have a significant other, making love can also be a great stress-buster! Do things to help alleviate your stress and you will find that your health immediately improves as well.

If you follow the above strategies you should be well on your way to having less stress in your life. The best thing about living with less stress is that it has a compound effect. As you reduce the stress in your life, you will find other ways to increase your stress-free lifestyle, because you will be relaxed and open enough to see them. Why not get started on the stress-free life path today?
